Introducing: Alvin Escajeda

Welcome to CCC Introduces, our series spotlighting our amazing community of contributors. Alvin has been with us since near the beginning, but we've never had the pleasure of properly sitting down and finding out what lies below that calm exterior. We have a full interview on Alvin's amazing inaugural Transcontinental ride coming up, but for now, allow Alvin to introduce himself.

Tell us about yourself.

I’m 32 years old, I’ve been riding most of my life but I really started my cycling journey at 17 when I got my first fixed gear bike. I’ve been pedaling ever since and the bike has taken me all over the globe, given me my closest friends and has changed my life for the better. I know spend most of my free time adventuring and racing, looking to show up as often as possible to events to represent myself, my team and my heritage. When I’m not riding or racing I work full time as an AutoCAD Drafter for an electrical utility company.

What do you love about cycling

Freedom. Adventure. Self-discovery.

What barriers have you faced in cycling

At first, it was a lot of ridicule for lack of gear, experience when I first dipped my toes into road racing. I was strong enough to be in the pack but felt like the elitism made older more experienced riders look down on me. I got called names and was told I didn’t belong but  I let that ridicule turn into inspiration to get better and better and ultimately surpassed my expectations by winning local races and making my way to the elite fields in a couple of seasons.

Why were you interested in contributing?

I want to be able to have an outlet where I can share some of my experiences in cycling with more ppl who I can identify with, and hopefully inspire others to pursue the sport.

Your fondest memory on the bike:

It’s actually one of my earliest memories, I was probably about 3 or 4 and it was sitting in a child seat as my dad road me around a lake in Ciudad Obregon, Mexico.
